What Is Your Condition as a Christian?
Colossians 3: 1-17

The Bible speaks about our Christian STATE. The apostle Paul wrote to the Philippian believers and said, “I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your STATE [or daily condition]. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your STATE. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:19-21). Years ago I remember hearing a song by the country singer Kenny Rogers, with the words, “I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in”.

The Bible clearly teaches a difference between our STANDING and our STATE. Our STANDING is our Relationship to God in Jesus Christ. And it never changes. But our STATE is our daily condition as a Christian, which includes the way we think and act and live. This is always changing. There is no doubt that we live in a sinful world and we are deeply affected by it. We hear it and see it on the job or on TV. We struggle with our sinful nature. Sometimes we see evil, think evil and even do evil. Evil is contrary to the nature of God, so we experience a struggle. Within all Christians there is a constant battle between right and wrong. It is defined in Galatians 5:16 -17, “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”
